Comments on bird numbers and behavior

(CC) On sunny days the trees were full of chickadees, nuthatches and finches but only a couple at a time would come to the feeder. We have had an unusual amount of cold weather and at least 1 1/2 foot of snow on the ground continually this winter. Except on sunny days the birds just seem to disappear. We had to contend with chipmunks - they even found a way to get into our hanging suet cakes. We saw them scare off the birds several times.

(LH) The ravens didn't make the survey dates and the crossbills have been around for months, yet I have not seen a single one at the feeder this winter.

(DJ) I have a resident sparrow that looks like a Song Sparrow but has a forked tail. Occasionally a huge flock of Pine Siskin visit - estimated at 150+ birds with a handful of House Finch and American goldfinch mixed in. The most mourning Doves has been 14. A Red-tailed Hawk has been seen hunting the doves. On Feb. 9 a magpie attacked and killed a gopher under the feeders.

(JK) For nearly a month 200+ mergansers have congregated in front of the Camp Easton on Gotham Bay. They come down in front of our house near the turn out in groups to feed. 2-3 Bald Eagle have been in Gotham Bay all winter.

(LS) On Jan. 16 I saw a flock of American Crow swirling and cawing around a tall evergreen where a Red-tailed Hawk was perched. (on 17th Street one block from home)
