Little Spokane River Painted Rocks Area Field Trip

  • At Home Store Parking Lot 201 w neider (map)

Join us for a trek around this special area and an optional late lunch/early dinner in Spokane to follow. Bring a light lunch, snacks and water to keep you going.

The Indian Painted Rocks are incredibly well preserved pictographs made with pulverized red rock that was mixed with fish or animal oil.  They serve as a reminder of the Spokane people's occupancy and use of the Inland Northwest long before the arrival of non-indigenous people to the area. The pictographs are located near the banks of the Little Spokane River in the Little Spokane River Natural Area, in close proximity to a large village site near the Little Spokane’s confluence with the Spokane River.

Target Birds: wrens; waterfowl; early migrants

Leadership: Ted Smith

Meet at the At Home parking lot where carpools will be voluntarily coordinated, and we will caravan to the site together.

Level of Difficulty: Moderate to difficult. This hike has hilly paths and some rocks to negotiate. Bring trekking poles and wear good hiking boots.
