Restoring the Basin: Environmental Recovery in Action
In-Person Presentation with Sharon Bosley, Executive Director of the BEIPC
What does it take to heal a watershed that stretches from the mountains of Montana to the Spokane River? This month’s guest is Sharon Bosley, Executive Director of the Basin Environmental Improvement Project Commission (BEIPC), for a presentation on one of the largest environmental cleanup efforts in the nation.
The BEIPC was established by the Idaho Legislature in 2001 to restore and protect the health of communities impacted by over a century of mining. The Bunker Hill Mining and Metallurgical Complex, now a designated Superfund Site, left a legacy of heavy metal contamination in our soils, rivers, and lakes. Today, the BEIPC brings together the State of Idaho, three local counties, the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, the State of Washington, and the U.S. government in a collaborative effort to clean up the land, restore critical habitats, and protect public health.
Our membership has received presentations on this effort in years past; Sharon will bring us up to date, with a focus on the restoration of the Lower Basin near Rose Lake and the Coeur d’Alene River Trail.
All are welcome!
